Plot[]

It is nearly Christmas time. At Christmas, the royal families have a tradition of giving the gifts they received the year before to others so as to set an example of the Second Law of Salacia to the salines and animals.

At school, Miss Marla asks the class what they got last year that they will be giving away this year. Miss Marla is giving away a pair of shoes with pearls in them. Ester is giving away a doll to Duda, the baker’s daughter. Maurico got a remote-controlled sea urchin, but because it broke, his parents are going to buy him a gift for Junior, who lives near his house. Polvina got a whole collection of Super Octopus comics and has decided to donate them to the school library. Tubarina got the Captain Shark movie on DVD, but because her mother found it violent, she decided to donate it to the library and watch it again when she turns 10. Isa tells everyone that she got a Santa hat, but she is unwilling to give it away for reasons she cannot mention. Miss Marla does not insist on pressuring her and moves on.

After school, Isa goes with the girls to the Octopus Palace while they wait for her parents to pick her up and take her home to the South Pole. The girls bring the subject back up and Isa reluctantly explains her reasons for not giving away her Santa hat. Because Isa was born out of the water, she was afraid to get into it. On Christmas the year before, she (under her mother’s suggestion) asked Santa for a gift that would help her overcome her fear of water, and so, she got a Santa hat. When she put it on, she found that her fear of water was gone and she could swim as fast as the penguins. As such, she cannot take it off, otherwise she would choke and die.

Doubting the hat’s apparent magical powers, Tubarina takes it off Isa’s head and fights with Ester over it, causing Isa to begin choking. When Ester accidently rips the hat, Isa chokes severely and faints. Aldo, the butler who had come into the room after hearing the commotion, takes Isa away as the girls follow.

A few minutes later, Isa wakes up in Polvina’s room, realising that she could breathe normally in the water without the hat. Isa thanks her friends for this revelation just as her parents arrive to pick her up, with the now-sewn-up hat in her hands. The next day at school, Isa tells everyone that she is giving her sewn-up hat to a penguin named Mr Penpen and wishes for another hat this Christmas as a reminder that she has the courage to swim in the water.

Notes[]

  • Polvina and Tubarina stating their intention to watch the Captain Shark movie when they turn 10 is a reflection of the advisory rating system in Brazil, with one of the levels stating "Not recommended for minors under 10 (without parental guidance)". This equates to a PG rating in some other countries.
  • Santa Claus knows about the existence of Salacia.
  • The North and South Poles are neither considered Salacia nor Dryland.
